In the event that an urgent student issues arises outside of hours, please contact the nursing Work Integrated Learning lead listed on the Contact us page.
Students are expected to: report injuries, infection exposure and near misses (accidents that might have occurred but did not occur) immediately to the placement supervisor. Any incidents that occur during placement are logged in S.A.R.A.H. (the Monash incident online database). Further information is provided on Page 18 of the Student Placement Guide, in the ‘Resources’ section of the placement portal.

Formative feedback (assessment for learning) and summative feedback (assessment of learning) are extremely important for students undertaking a clinical placement. We recommend early communication with both the student and the university when a student is at risk of failing, for the implementation of targeted supports. The ‘Fitness for Practice’ learning module provides several useful strategies for educators working with students at risk.

Accomodation

Monash Rural Health provides accommodation for medicine, nursing and allied health students on regional and rural placements. Accommodation includes college-style and houses in local communities. All accommodation is furnished, has fully equipped kitchens and internet access.

Your profession-specific contact person will be able to provide you with the relevant assessment documents. Find your contact person on the Contact us page of the placement portal.
Placement providers are required to provide students with an appropriate orientation and induction to the workplace. The induction checklist itemises the health and safety briefings that should be covered at the start of each student placement. Items on the checklist include basic workplace health and safety issues (emergency evacuation procedures, first aid, hazard & Incident reporting) and significant safety issues specific to the type of work being undertaken (infection control, ergonomics, or manual handling).
The scheduling of clinical placements is a challenging endeavour, and changes are often difficult to implement. Any necessary change in placement arrangement should be made in consultation with the clinical placement lead listed on the Contact us page of the placement portal.
The feedback you are required to provide will depend on your role in supervision and your health care profession. For tips about providing feedback, see the ‘Providing effective feedback’ module in the placement portal. There is a department dedicated to the development of students’ clinical and professional communication skills, the Student Academic Support Unit (SASU). You can access SASU support for your student through your Monash placement coordinator.
Monash placement partners are able to access free-of-charge resources and workshops run by the Faculty of Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences’ Student Academic Support Unit (SASU). To express your interest in attending a workshop, please email sasueducatorprogram@monash.edu
